“We believe that music has the power to unlock the potential within every child, as well as serve as a tool for healing and nation-building. Not only is playing the marimba a physical activity; Marimba Jam ensures the psychological benefits are also honed, such as creating a safe-space and feeling part of a bigger community. Our aim is to create an environment in which everyone feels equal, accepted and unified. We use marimba as a means to harness more empathy among the youth to ensure our students are well-rounded and ready to face the world.”

Our qualified teachers are currently based in the Southern Suburbs and teach hundreds of students at various schools around Cape Town on a weekly basis.

Each one of our teachers is trained in the South African Marimba and has graduated from our MARIMBA JAM Teacher’s Training course.

The South African Marimba are very popular in Cape Town and our school group option allows for great team-building opportunities as well as exposure to the gift of music.

Students in these groups are not expected to read music or to have played another musical instrument before. The focus of these groups is to create energetic and passionate marimba performances that truly demonstrate the vibrant atmosphere of African Music.

Each band receives one lesson a week and each school can have as many bands as needed. Schools are responsible for organizing performance opportunities for their bands, although we do invite all the bands that we teach to our annual events: MARIMBA JAM FESTIVAL and MARIMBA JAM EISTEDDFOD.

Schools are expected to provide their own marimbas and our teachers travel to and from the respective schools for each lesson. (If your school does not yet have marimbas, please contact us for alternative arrangements or for our manufacturer’s details)

For schools who are interested in a program that delves deeper into a more academic study of the instrument/ would like their students to enter external level exams- check out our Syllabus Page.

PS: All profits made at Marimba Jam are used to sustain the community work we do. If you decide to outsource your marimba bands to us, you will be directly supporting our mission and giving back to your community – thank you!

The heart of Marimba Jam is captured by our motto “Finding Harmony in Community”.
